Jet ski is a vital part of the gear not only for towing the surfer but also for helping him/she to take him out of the danger zone. It isn't the same get hit by a 2 meter compare to a 15 meter wave.
Also big wave surfers need to have the knowledge of how to drive a jet ski and how to handle the best way possible in a dangerous situation.
Checking all the straps are well tied up , believe me you don't one any loose strap while riding big waves
